Named after Alexander the Great, Alexandria speaks volumes of the rich history the ancient civilization, which still continues to baffle archaeologists with its prized mysteries. Alexandria is Egypt's second largest city and serves as the summer retreat for escaping Cairo's heat. Alexandria has both overland and underwater historical sites which attracts a lot of people from around the world, and now with the discoveries of a number catacombs and other ancient remains, the tourist attractions simply keeps on increasing. Another crowd puller is Pompey's Pillar, which is 25-meter high granite pillar built in AD 297. The Roman Amphitheater, built in the 2nd century AD is another major historical attraction which is definitely worth a visit. Built on the former site of the library of Alexandria, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina is a huge modern library, which is also a research center. There are many other ancient attractions in Alexandria, which include Roman Catacombs, Montaza Palace, and also underwater archaeological sites.


Alexandria too, has a a fair share of entertainment and recreation centered around Midan Saad Zaghlul. The Corniche is also a live-wire of recreation and entertainment with a multitude of casinos and the alluring beach. Getting around Alexandria is another interesting affair, the most eye-catching and fascinating but slow mode of transportation being the tram. It's the unarguably the cheapest mode, but very useful when it comes to sightseeing for tourists. However, taxis and buses are also easily available.


A wonderful destination for a captivating vacation, Alexandria offers a fantastic range of accommodation options. Many of the Alexandria hotels are centered around the Corniche, but there are multitude of hotels located in other parts of the city as well, which offer budget accommodations to luxury ones. However, Most of the hotels in Alexandria are in set in decent locations and offer easy access to the most of the tourist attractions in the city.
